So what is a mini notebook computer?
Also known as netbooks, mini notebook computers are a new class of laptops designed to be small, light, inexpensive and yet still functional. Many different computer manufacturers are now competing in this market.
Why a Mini Notebook Computer?
- Portablity - You can take a mini notebook anywhere. It fits inside a purse, a backpack, a briefcase, pretty much anywhere. You can use it on a bus without ticking off the guy sitting next to you.
- Weight - along with the size factor, mini notebooks are also incredably light. Expect a mini notebook to weight less than half of a standard notebook.
- Simple functionality - With a mini notebook computer, you'll be able to do your word processing, keep track of your finances, surf the web, and even watch dvds and online content.
- Price - Mini notebooks are among the cheapest computers you can buy.
- Battery life - these usually have a better battery life than a standard notebook.
Why not a Mini Notebook Computer?
There are also several reasons why a mini notebook computer may not be right for you.
- Screen size. If you have bad vision or you like to see most of a webpage at one time, then a mini notebook may not be right for you.
- Video games. If you play a lot of modern video games, and you wish to play them on your computer, a mini notebook probably doesn't have the gumption to run them.
- Other resource intensive activities. If you're looking for a machine to render 3d graphics or edit videos in real time, then a mini notebook probably isn't what you're looking for.
- Graphics editing. The screen is just to small to do any real editing.
- Tiny Keyboard. If you have large fingers or you already have a hard time typing, a mini notebook isn't going to help things out at all.
Purchasing a Mini Notebook computer
As you shop for a mini notebook, there are some things to keep in mind and consider.
- Battery life - How long of a battery life do you need? If you're planning on using your machine on the train into work, make sure your battery is going to last the whole way.
- Hard Drive - How much hard drive space are you going to need? Will you be keeping most of your data on the mini notebook itself, or will you be keeping most of it on an external hard drive or a thumbdrive? You can save even more if you don't need a large hard drive.
- Operating system - Do you need Windows, or are you looking for an Ubuntu Linux computer? Many manufacturers provide options for both, and sometimes the Linux version is cheaper.
- USB ports - Do you have a mouse, a drive and a camera you need to have connected at all times? Better make sure you have enough USB ports.
